"The Rush"

Well for those of you who have been following our blog, I mentioned a few months ago that Ty and I were going to do a Triathlon in Rexburg. This last weekend we did it!

Ty had been in Utah most of the week and drove home late Friday morning, changed his clothes, I got off work and we headed off to Rexburg. We dropped the dogs off at "Grandma's" in Shelley. We went to a "first timers" meeting and learned about all the rules and logistics and tips and all! Then we had a baked potato dinner, which they provided and got checked in. We stayed that night with my brother and sister-in-law, Bob and Lo. We drove the course for the race Friday night and I think Ty and I both realized how much elevation there was to climb! Afterwards we all went out for pie :) That's what I call Carb Loading!!

Ty kept telling me that he really didn't want to do this--like 20 or 30 times!! (He hates swimming and thought he might drown in the lake)!

As you might imagine, neither of us slept really well. I was so excited and anxious, and I think Ty was just so exhausted from driving and hard labor all week.

We did the Sprint length, which was 1/2 mile swim, 15 mile bike and 3.1 mile run; about half of the Intermediate triathlon.

Even though our race didn't start until 8:00, we were up at 5:50 AM hurrying to get all our stuff together.

The Intermediate started at 7:00 and we watched them for a minute as they all started their swim.

I have to say it wasn't the warmest that morning. My mom mentioned that the billboard read 44 degrees as she was driving up with the rest of the family.

The men started 10 minutes before the women and I have to admit the water was much warmer than the air. (Thankfully!) I did the breaststroke the whole time, which allowed me to see where I was going. I'll tell you the most annoying part was the freestyle swimmers zigzagging back and forth in front of me and one girl actually kicked me in the shoulder. :(

I hadn't realized it but I actually passed Ty in the water and was out changing about 7 minutes before him. But he quickly caught up and passed me on the bike, on the hill up to the Temple, with a friendly pat on the back!

I didn't ever see Ty again until the finish line. The bike section was nice, but LOTS of uphill! It took me a little longer that I thought it would on the bike, but I made up time on the run.

I wasn't so sure about the run, as part of it was up a four wheeler trail up the side of the mountain. But I made better time than I had so far at home running on the flat ground and really enjoyed it!

The last 1/4 mile was around the track at Madison High School and I could hear my Dad and Ty yelling for me, so I sprinted the last 100 meters. It was so weird and exhilarating to hear the announcer shout my name, number and time, along with "Look at the speed on that girl!"

I have to say I don't think we were as "well trained" as most of the people there, but we did pretty good.

I beat my goal of 2 hours and 15 minutes but not by much, with a time of 2:13:25.3.
Ty ended up finishing in 2:05:13.6.

It was great! Even now Ty keeps saying that "when we do it next year...". We both had a great time! It was awesome. Neither of us had done any kind of race before this one and felt really good about it.

For our reward we both we able to get a sweet deal on new running shoes. :)
